Target Audience

This course is suitable for staff working with adults, children and young people.


This course aims to introduce you to child maltreatment.  This includes the meaning of neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse and the signs that these may be taking place.   You will also learn what you must do if you suspect a child or young person (met in any circumstances) is being abused or neglected.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you will know about child maltreatment and its different forms.  You will be able to recognise possible signs of maltreatment and know what to do if you have concerns about the wellbeing of a child or young person.

Course Contents

  • Child maltreatment in its different forms (physical, emotional and sexcual abuse, and neglect) including prevalence and impact.
  • Possible signs of child maltreatment as this relates to your role
  • What to do if there are concerns about child maltreatment, including local policies and procedures around who to contact and where to obtain further advice and support
  • The importance of sharing information (including the consequences of failing to do so)
  • What to do if you feel your concerns are not being taken seriously or you experience any other barriers to referring a child/family
  • The risks associated with the internet and online soical networking


This course links to QCF Unit P5, Safeguarding children.  You may use your learning from attending this course towards the Level 5 Leadership for Care Services Diploma
