Target Audience

You would benefit from attedning this course if you have responsibility for administering medication to a customer.  It will also be helpful if you support customers to administer their own medication.



This course provides you with a comprehensive understanding of how to administer medication in a safe manner in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements.


Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course you will be clear about your legal and regulatory responsibilities for the storage, administration and disposal of medication.  You will know the appropriate methods for safe medication administration; oral, tropical, inhalation and eye/ear drops.   You will also know how to dispose of medication and how to deal with any problems you may experience, both during and after, the administration.  You will also understand the meaning of terms and abbreviations used in the administration of medication.

  • Your role and responsibilities for medication administration
  • Legal and regulatory requirements for the storage and administration of medication
  • Forms and routes of medication; types of medication and their effects
  • Terms, abbreviations and units of measurements used in medicine handling
  • Managing, administering and disposing of drugs including:

Receiving and safe storage of medication

Principles of safe and hygienic administration including general sequence for administration

Administration of oral, topical, inhaled and eye/ear drops

Recording and labeling of medication

Disposal of medication

Controlled drugs storage and administration

Safe handling of needles and sharps

Handling problems with medication administration

Side effects and contra-indications
