Is this qualification right for me?

This level 4 certificate is ideal for you if you work within the field of substance misuse, including dealing with drug, alcohol or solvent abuse. This qualification will give you specialist knowledge and professional skills so you can be more resourceful and effective. The course covers a range of topics from identifying misuse to suporting individuals through treatment and rehabilitation, enabling you to focus on the substance misuse issues that impact on your work.

The certificate in working with Substance Misuse is for professionals who work with individuals who misuse substances, either directly or indirectly, for example, you may be a  Support Worker, Housing Worker, Police Officer or Teacher.

Outline of the qualification

You need to select units with a total credit value of 18.  11 credits  must be from level 4 units.  The remaining 7 credits can be selected from level 3 units as long as the units reflect the work that you carry out.

Level 4 units include:-

  • Unit 23, Support and challenge workers on specific aspects of their practice (5 credits)
  • Unit 33, Enable individuals who misuse substances to change their offending behaviour (8 credits)
  • Unit 25. Develop, implement and review care plans for individuals who misuse substances (6 credits)

Level 3 units include:-

  • Unit 001, Recognise indications of substance misuse and refer individuals to specialists ( 4 credits)
  • Unit 006, Increase awareness about drugs, alcohol or substances with individuals and groups (7 credits)

How am I assessed?

You will assigned a qualified and experienced assessor who will agree a plan of assessment with you, this may include attendnce at a set number of lessons.  The assessment methods may include, observing you whilst you carry out specific duties, written and oral questions, an examination of your records and reports and professional discussion.  You will receive an inital assessment and induction at the start of the course. This will ensure you have selected units that reflect your role and the methods of assessment meet your individual needs.
