Target Audience

This course is ideal for you if you work with individual who have, or are at risk of, visual impairment.

Aims

This course will use practical exercises with the aim of raising your awareness and understanding of the different types of visual impairment and how these affect an individual.  The course also aims to enable you to support a blind or partially sighted customer for example, using guiding techniques

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you will know common conditions affecting sight and how these impact on the life of an individual.  You will know how the physical environment can be improved to increase safety and will consider solutions to some of the problems an individual may encounter during activities of daily living.  You will know how to communicate with an individual with impaired vision and how to ensure information is accessible.

  • Anatomy of the eye:  Common eye conditions that challenge functional vision including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts
  • Environmental awareness
