Target Audience

This course is intended for any staff who have direct contact with customers.  It provides an introduction to Metnal Health conditions to raise your awareness and develop understanding.

If you have experience of working within mental health services, this course will not be suitable for you.

 

Aims

This course aims to ensure you know how to identify the signs and symptoms of mental illness and know what to do if you identify an individual who may be experiencing a difficulty with their mental health.

 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course you will know how to identify, understand and help a person who may be experiencing difficulties with their mental health.  You will know how to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health conditions and how to effectively guide an individual towards support services.

 

Course Contents

  • The context of mental health including the mental health continuum, stigma in mental health and the normal routes to obtaining treatment
  • Signs and symptoms of mental illness, including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and personality disorders
  • Know how to provide initial help, including the best way to commuicate using active listening techniques.
  • Guiding the person towards the appropriate help
  • Evaluation
