Target Audience

This course is relevant to staff working with individual who may have, or be at risk of having, Epilepsy.

Aims

This course aims to raise your awareness of epilepsy to enable you to support an indiviudal with this condition.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you will know what epilepsy is; its causes and treatments.  You will know the types of seizure an individual may experience and what to do in the event that an individual experiences a seizure.  You will also know the factors to consider when supporting an individual with epilepsy.

  • The meaning of epilepsy
  • The cause of epilepsy
  • Treatment of epilepsy
  • Types of seizures including grand mal, absence, myoclonic, clonic, tonic, and atonic seizures
  • Triggers
  • First Aid
  • Supporting individuals with epilepsy including liaison with other professionals and an epilepsy plan

Progression

If you are working with an indiviudal who has epilepsy and are required to administer medication during a seizure you may now be ready to attend further training in the administration of rectal and buccal medication.
